Day 1: Pacific Coasts' Sites, Lights & Bites: Coastal Attractions and Activities (PDF) - • Moss Beach's Fitzgerald Marine Reserve (Moss Beach) is one of the best spots on California's Pacific coast to study intertidal ecology. At low tide, the tide pools serve up sea urchins, crabs, sea anemones, starfish and other aquatic life for viewing. Naturalists are on hand to point out interesting facts, lead hikes, and focus on understanding the ways of the reserve. • Sport fishing is provided out of Princeton Harbor (Half Moon Bay). Hobby fisherman can try their luck off the pier at Pillar Point, the San Mateo bridge Pier and Oyster Point Pier. • Rent a horse on the coastside and take a relaxing ride along one of our many beaches. • Pigeon Point Lighthouse (Pescadero): One of the tallest lighthouses in the U.S. Built in 1872 following a string of shipwrecks. • Point Montara Lighthouse (Montara): Picturesque 1875 light station served as a naval training base during WWII. • On the bayside, visit Foster City and enjoy kayaking, paddle boating, and water skiing.
Day 2: Spooktacular Places of San Mateo County (PDF) - • At a spot that is now the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company (Pillar Point) rests a fourteen-foot, two-ton anchor from the Rydal Hall, a sailing vessel that was shipwrecked on the reefs at nearby Pillar Point in October 1876. When rare storms hit the Coastside, passers-by swear that they hear the sounds of moaning in the vicinity of the anchor. Some believe the moans are the lament of the lost souls who went down with their ship. • Moss Beach Distillery (Moss Beach), a spot made famous by its resident ghost whose story was featured in the TV program "Unsolved Mysteries." According to the legend, a beautiful married woman, always dressed in blue, fell in love with a sophisticated ladies' man that was a piano player in a local bar. Their illicit love affair continued until the stormy night when the "Blue Lady" died in a tragic automobile accident. Her ghost, some have said, appears dripping wet, covered with slime and seaweed. • The historic Woodside Store (Woodside), an early center of the logging community, is said to be haunted by the ghost dog belonging to Dr. Tripp, the store's founder.
