The San Mateo County Historical Association is pleased to announce that “Environmental Hero” Lennie Roberts is its 2019 San Mateo County History Maker.  Ms. Roberts is being honored for her more than 50 years of work as perhaps the most skilled defender of the natural environment on the San Francisco Peninsula.

The event will take place at the Burlingame Hyatt Regency Hotel on September 17. The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a hosted cocktail reception, followed by dinner, a brief live auction, a special film created by the Historical Association as a salute to Roberts and then comments by Lennie herself.  The Master of Ceremonies will be past California State Assemblyman Gene Mullin.

It is the Historical Association’s belief that Lennie Roberts has truly made history.  Just a few of her achievements include:

Back in 1968, she joined the Board of Committee for Green Foothills and since that time helped make it one of the most effective environmental organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area.

She has served with distinction as the Committee’s Legislative Advocate for San Mateo County since 1978.

In 1972, she helped found the incredibly accomplished Mid-peninsula Regional Open Space District.

In 1986, she was an author and co-sponsor of Measure A, the locally significant Coastside Protection Initiative.

She, as Board Chairwoman of the Yosemite Natural History Association, was one of the founders of the Yosemite Fund in 1988.

In 1996, she authored and co-sponsored the Devil’s Slide Tunnel Initiative in order to save Montara Mountain.  She then became one of the Tunnel’s most effective advocates, leading to the triumphant passage of Measure T that resulted in the Tunnel’s completion in 2013.

In 2016, she was recognized by the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club as that year’s “Environmental Hero,” citing her decades of dedicated effort to preserve “hills, open spaces and wild habitats in San Mateo County.”
