About

Jerry Emmanuel has been a member of the San Francisco art and media world for several decades.  His new 'Soul Scroll' series was completed over the past three years.  "I have tried to expand a single visual  statement through a  variety of different images. When viewed together, they evolve as one."  Emmanuel physically paints in books then digitally applies the artworks onto printed fabric.  Nearly all measure approximately 30 X 48 inches.

Born in San Francisco in 1932, Emmanuel attended San Francisco State, California School of Fine Art (now SF Art Institute), Ecole Paul Colin and Grande Chaumière, Paris, and also the Art Students League and New School in NYC.  He has exhibited in San Francisco, Paris and New York City.  In addition to creating his own pieces, Emmanuel worked for the Vorpal Gallery for 25 years, first in New York and then in San Francisco; now closed, Vorpal Gallery was a major player in the San Francisco art scene for many years.  He also worked for the San Francisco Chronicle for five years in the 1950's and with the SF News and then the Call-Bulletin, and later with the World Telegram in New York before it closed.  More writing work included a weekly art review column in NYC for the magazines Night Owl and Night Beat.  He also wrote New York letter for Arts Canada, and organized and participated in exhibitions at Columbia and Pace Universities, all in the 1960's and 1970's.  Back in San Francisco, Emmanuel was awarded the Purchase prize, 1st prize for painting, at San Francisco's Art Annual in the 1950's  and the City subsequently owned his winning painting. He was also chosen for the James D. Phelan Award Exhibition at the Palace of the Legion of Honor at about the same time.
